Information

The Tokyo Imperial Palace serves as the official residence of the Emperor of Japan. It occupies an area of more than three square kilometres, and is located in Tokyo’s Chiyoda ward. Its complex consists of the different private residences of the members of the Imperial Family, administrative offices, museums, an archive, stone walls, moats and gardens.

Built on the location of the old Edo Castle which served as the Tokugawa shogun’s seat from the early 1600s to mid 1800s, the Palace’s construction was completed in 1888. It had to be rebuilt decades later after it suffered serious damage during World War II.

Nowadays, it is one of the most important Tokyo landmarks, a popular attraction that sees throngs of tourists throughout the year. During spring and autumn, its grounds are filled with crowds of people who wish to witness the beauty of the blooming cherry flowers and the magical colours of the autumn foliage.

Other notable attractions in the area are the Museum of the Imperial Collections, the Science Museum, the Nippon Budo-Kan, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Tokyo Imperial Palace Tour

Visitors to the palace can go on a guided tour of the grounds most times of the year. The itinerary includes:

• Kokyo Gaien – the large outer garden found right in front of the main palace
• Nijubashi – the pair of bridges that lead to the inner palace grounds

Unfortunately, the inner grounds and the buildings are off limits to the public, except on New Year’s Greeting (2 January) and Emperor’s Birthday (23 December), when people can enter the area and catch a glimpse of the Imperial Family members from a balcony.

The complex is also home to the Imperial East Palace Gardens, which are open year round, except on Fridays, Mondays, and certain holidays and occasions.

The Tokyo Imperial Palace is only a 10-minute walk from Tokyo Station.

Hours and Fees

A tour of the Tokyo Imperial Palace is free of charge. However, visitors are required to apply for a slot through the Imperial Household Agency website.
