If you plan on traveling extensively around Japan, then getting a Japan Rail Pass is a no-brainer. While the initial cost looks quite expensive, the discounted passes cover unlimited travel on the entire JR Network and also include the use of selected buses and ferries. Put it this way, booking a return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto will cost you the same price as a 7 day pass.
